You need to see The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Not gonna spoil anything, but the movie pays so much homage to the various games throughout the series. From the environment to the soundtrack to even brief exchanges, all knitted into the plot in a surprisingly organic way, the film crew really put so much love and, by extension, research into the project and really made the movie an experience to remember.

Some say that the barrage of references are gimmicky and alienating (instead of the movie holding your hand concerning what is what, it assumes your knowledge of the Mario Bros. universe), but really, I would call this one of the film's strongest points. This unspoken fluency rewards you for your insight, and while watching it in theaters, I found myself appreciating this much more than I thought I would. It really is a Mario film made for Mario fans.
